HEIC to PNG Conversion: When, Why, and How

heicpngconversionformats

Most HEIC conversion guides tell you to convert iPhone photos to JPEG. That advice is usually correct, but it is not complete. PNG can be the better output format when you need lossless pixels, sharp text, or a file that will be edited again before final delivery.

The key is understanding what each format is good at. HEIC is efficient for storing photos on iPhone. JPEG is the most compatible format for sharing photos. PNG is best when exact pixels matter more than file size.

Quick Recommendation

Use HEIC to JPG for normal photos, email attachments, social media, printing, and websites that simply refuse HEIC uploads.

Use HEIC to PNG for screenshots, images with text, diagrams, UI captures, receipts, documents, product labels, and editing workflows where you want to avoid another lossy compression step.

If you are unsure, choose JPG for camera photos and PNG for screenshots or graphics.

JPEG vs PNG: The Practical Difference

JPEG reduces file size by discarding visual information that the human eye usually does not notice. That is useful for photos because natural images contain gradients, texture, and noise. At a quality setting around 90-95%, a converted JPEG often looks identical in normal viewing while staying reasonably small.

PNG does not use lossy photo compression. It preserves exact pixels, which is why it is excellent for screenshots, icons, text, and interface captures. The tradeoff is size: a 12 MP iPhone photo that becomes a 4-6 MB JPG may become a 20-40 MB PNG.

When HEIC to PNG Makes Sense

PNG is worth using when the image contains sharp edges or will go through another editing step.

Good cases include:

  • Screenshots with text, tables, menus, or app interfaces
  • Images that will be annotated in design or documentation tools
  • Receipts, labels, maps, tickets, and document-like photos
  • Product images that need clean edges after background removal
  • Technical images where compression artifacts could hide details
  • Files that will be converted again later and should avoid repeated lossy compression

PNG is usually not the right choice for ordinary camera photos. For portraits, travel photos, food photos, and family pictures, the PNG will often be several times larger without a visible improvement.

Privacy Matters More With PNG Workflows

Many PNG conversions happen for work documents, screenshots, receipts, or product images. Those files can include names, addresses, order numbers, private conversations, location details, or business information. Uploading them to a random converter creates a privacy risk even if the site looks simple.

heicgo converts HEIC files locally in your browser. The tool reads the HEIC file, decodes it, draws it to Canvas, and exports the selected output format without uploading your image. This is especially useful when converting document-like images to PNG because those files are often more sensitive than casual photos.

Does PNG Preserve EXIF Metadata?

On heicgo, EXIF preservation is supported for JPG output. PNG output is treated as lossless pixel output and does not preserve EXIF metadata.

This is intentional. JPEG has a widely supported EXIF structure that photo viewers, operating systems, and metadata tools understand. PNG metadata support is less consistent across apps and browsers. Some viewers ignore metadata chunks, some strip them, and some only support limited text fields. For a reliable photo metadata workflow, convert to JPG and keep EXIF enabled.

If your goal is to preserve GPS coordinates, camera model, orientation, and date taken, choose JPG. If your goal is exact image pixels, choose PNG.

How to Convert HEIC to PNG With heicgo

  1. Open heicgo.com
  2. Drop one or more HEIC or HEIF files into the converter
  3. In Output format, choose PNG
  4. Optionally set a maximum width if the original image is very large
  5. Click Convert files
  6. Download each PNG or use Download All (ZIP) for batch results

The quality slider is disabled for PNG because PNG output is lossless. Quality settings apply to JPG, where they control the balance between file size and visual quality.

File Size Reality Check

Here is a realistic example for a 12 MP iPhone photo:

FormatFile SizeGood for email?Good for editing?
HEIC original2-4 MBSometimesLimited compatibility
JPG 92%4-7 MBYesGood enough for most edits
JPG 100%8-12 MBMaybeStill lossy
PNG25-45 MBUsually noYes, if exact pixels matter

This is why PNG should be a deliberate choice. It is excellent when you need it, but wasteful when you do not.

PNG vs WebP for HEIC Conversion

WebP is another modern option, but it is not always accepted by older software, office workflows, or upload forms. PNG is older, widely understood, and dependable for screenshots and graphics. If you are creating a file for a documentation system, design handoff, or internal tool that accepts PNG, it is usually the safer option.

For public websites, WebP may be better than PNG for performance. For universal compatibility with photos, JPG is still the safest output.

The Bottom Line

Convert HEIC to JPG for most photos. It is smaller, widely compatible, and on heicgo it can preserve EXIF metadata.

Convert HEIC to PNG when you need lossless output, crisp text, screenshots, document-like images, or an editing source that should not be compressed again.

The best converter is not the one with the most formats. It is the one that lets you choose the right format for the job while keeping your files private.
